CHINESE DECORATED  LETTER PAPER

Lu Xun and Zheng Zhenduo feared that the art of making decorated stationery would perish. They collected as many high-quality copies, as they could get in Beijing and Shanghai and entrusted the Rong Bao Zhai Publisher with the publication of their collection. In 1934 the Beiping jianpu, the collection of stationery from Beiping by Lu Xun and Zheng Zhenduo in book form with 332 leaves, was published.

The edition of 6 volumes, now 300 leaves, is printed by the Rong Bao Zhai up to the present day, named

WANG, Gai

Jie zi yuan hua zhuan Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting

Numerous woodcuts (some               color-printed). Part I in 5 vols;    Part II in 4 vols.; Part III in 4 vols. 13 vols. complete. 8vo

A later edition of the famous Mustard Seed Garden, Chinas pre-eminent painting handbook. This work has remained influential in China to the present day. The first part was first published in 1679, the second and third in 1701. There were many editions in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Each part consisted of several volumes, each devoted to a different topic, technical problem, or style. The Mustard Seed Garden served as an inspiration for Japanese color-printed books of the 18th century.

The first volume of part one is given over entirely to text introducing basic principles and elementary methods of Chinese painting. This is followed in volumes two and three, by well-drawn and clearly described illustrations of trees, rocks, human   figures, animals, buildings, boats,                      and furniture.                   75 wood block color prints without frame on double sheets. Part III vol. 2 = 36 color prints Part III vol. 4 = 39 color prints

Very good set. Some worming and other defects here and there,

Edgren adds his comment regarding the complications of this book: the question of the different editions of the work is extremely complicated. One Chinese specialist claims to be aware of more than eleven Chinese editions published from the end of the seventeenth century to the end of the nineteenth century.

First edition 1679/1701          This edition later.
